By late September 1945, enrollment at Szczecin’s first Polish school exploded from thirty-six students to 300. Many arrived barefoot and hungry, speaking barely any Polish. Children aged 7 to 14 shared the same desks because there was nowhere else to put them. By December, the school was serving 1,200 meals per day, turning a classroom into a canteen so students wouldn’t leave for lunch and never return.

The chaos made a kind of sense: just three months earlier, this had been the German city of Stettin. After World War II, Poland’s border shifted west, Stettin became Szczecin, and nearly everything inside the school changed with it. The neo-Gothic building at Aleja Piastów 6 had opened in 1901 as Arndt-Mädchen-Mittelschule, an elite girls’ school where proper Fräulein learned penmanship and deportment.

The Gothic arches and heavy doors stayed put, but the language, lessons, and loyalties all changed. German became the foreign language. The school was renamed for Bolesław Chrobry, Poland’s first king, reflecting the city’s new Polish identity. More than a century after opening its doors, it remains Szczecin’s oldest continuously operating primary school, a building whose identity has changed far more dramatically than its architecture ever has.
