Jungfraujoch is the highest railway station in Europe. Located in the Bernese Alps, it was made possible by Swiss entrepreneur Adolph Guyer Zeller, who had the wild dream of blasting a tunnel into the mountain so a railway could reach the rocky summit. Hundreds of workers using tons of explosives eventually carved out that tunnel, laying tracks over the course of a decade. In February 1912, the tunnel finally connected the Kleine Scheidegg station to the summit of Jungfrau.

Though Jungfraujoch is the highest station in Europe, the mountain it services is second to the French summit of Mont Blanc. But Mont Blanc is not easily reachable by rail, so for those who lack sufficient mountaineering skills, Jungfrau’s the summit for you. Park yourself on these lovely red seats and enjoy the lift.
