Area 55 Futuro House

Joshua Tree, California | C.1968

Conceived in the late 196os as a “portable ski chalet,” this retro pod stands proudly in the desert of Joshua Tree. Fewer than 100 of these flying saucers were built, making it highly sought after by collectors. Although this Futuro house had an interesting origin story (it originally was at the Playboy Club Hotel in Wisconsin, and was said to be one of Hugh Hefner’s favorite favorite amenities), it now is home to a more wholesome activity: glamping.

With only 85 futuro houses in the world, this orange orb is the only one in which people can stay in! For $415 a night, glamping has never been so out of this world.
