Wyman Estate Gatehouse
Formerly the public entrance to an estate, this gatehouse has served as the headquarters of John's Hopkins' student newspaper since 1965.
Albion, Michigan | C.1835
Albion is a private liberal arts college that shares a name with its town in Michigan. The college is proudly supported by an unusual mascot: Brit the Briton, who looks remarkably like the love child of King Arthur and Captain America.
But Albion has several distinguishing features beyond its ancient mascot, notably an affection for rocks. A giant boulder greets you at one of the entrances, but it’s not your average stone. It’s called— wait for it—“The Rock,” and was gifted by the class of 1899. It gets painted by students nearly daily during the school year, so is adorned with a surrealist clock one day, cryptic symbols the next, school announcements the following.
Though the college is deservedly respected for its liberal arts and strong rock game, it’s not known for its top-tier athletics. Nevertheless, this A adorns Alumni Field (nicknamed—wait for it—“The A Field”), home to the Briton soccer and lacrosse teams. After completing this bold yellow line, presumably the remaining paint in the bucket was offered for use on The Rock.
