Miami, Florida | C.1941
German-born Richard Kiehnel studied at the University of Breslau and the Γcole des Beaux-Arts in Paris before landing in Pittsburgh, then pivoted to sunny Florida in 1922, where he swapped Mediterranean grandeur for sleeker forms. The Carlyle marked Kiehnel’s advance to Art Moderne styling, a shift from the ornate Mediterranean Revival estates that built his reputation.
When it opened in 1941 with its seafoam green and white palette, the building showcased striking vertical piers, horizontal lines, visor-like sunshades, curvaceous corners, and the rule of thirds with three dividing vertical sections. But Kiehnel’s restrained creation became Hollywood’s most overbooked supporting actor. The hotel has appeared in Bad Boys 2, Random Hearts, Pronto, The Birdcage, and Scarface, plus the sitcom The Golden Palace and Miami Vice, racking up more screen credits than most actors ever will.
