The blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Koun ran for 75 weeks straight – nearly 400 consecutive sold-out shows in a single meringue-shaped auditorium. This is what happens when a jeweler decides to build a cinema.

Mehtab Chandra Golcha spent a decade constructing his dream: a theater that combined luxury, architecture, and entertainment unlike any other in India. When Chief Minister Mohanlal Sukhadia laid the foundation stone in 1966, no one imagined it would take ten full years to complete.

Architect W. M. Namjoshi – known for his Streamline Moderne cinema designs – created something exceedingly rare: an Art Moderne building in a country where the style barely existed. Nine stars on the exterior signify nine gemstones in Navaratna style, a nod to the Golcha family’s jewelry heritage.

Inside, you don’t buy a ticket for a seat – you buy Pearl, Ruby, Emerald, or Diamond. The auditorium holds 1,132 plush seats, each one angled toward spectacle. The Bhuramal Rajmal Surana group, jewelers in Jaipur since 1735, still operates it today.

Built not as a private palace, but as a palace for the public, Raj Mandir remains a place where families, friends, and strangers gather beneath the same ceiling to share the simple ritual of going to the movies. A reminder that the grandest theaters aren’t just built to impress – they’re built to be enjoyed by everyone.
