Regarded as a celebration of tradition by some, a shameful glorification of violence by others, the bullfight continues to evoke extreme passion in the people of Spain. One of the world’s oldest and most significant bullrings, La Maestranza is a mecca for toreros skilled enough to fight within its bounds, staring down triumph or death.

Twentieth-century architect Rafael Moneo contemplated the provoked bulls and their valiant opponents from a comfortable distance, and remarked: “The Maestranza reminds us that there is always a place for the brave, and that our destiny is unwritten.”
