Wyman Estate Gatehouse
Formerly the public entrance to an estate, this gatehouse has served as the headquarters of John's Hopkins' student newspaper since 1965.
Oxford, United Kingdom | C.1870
In contrast to the immoderate stone facade of All Souls, this budget conscious college was built using brick. Its creators received backlash for disrupting the tradition of noble stone, with St. John’s College even launching a secret society with a less-than-covert name: Destroy Keble. They sought to tear down the edifice “one brick at a time,” demanding that hopeful members of the club literally bring them a brick from the rival college. Luckily, the society’s mission was a failure. Keble remains deeply proud of their distinguishing bricks— and even gifts an esteemed foam replica to their graduates.
