In contrast to the immoderate stone facade of All Souls, this budget conscious college was built using brick. Its creators received backlash for disrupting the tradition of noble stone, with St. John’s College even launching a secret society with a less-than-covert name: Destroy Keble. They sought to tear down the edifice “one brick at a time,” demanding that hopeful members of the club literally bring them a brick from the rival college.
