In 1651, an entrepreneur named Jacob opened what he claimed to be the first English coffeehouse. But the locale later became a hotel, grocer, marmalade center, co-op, post office, and a teddy bear company…before The Grand Café was reestablished in the late 1990s at the site where it all began. So is it truly the oldest coffeehouse in England if it wasn’t brewing pots all that time? The folks across the street at Queen’s Lane have their own opinions.
