Fresia, Chile | C.1940
Fresia is a charming town of twelve thousand people in the Los Lagos region of Chile. From the stands of the municipal stadium you can see the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes in the distance. Notwithstanding potential lava, the town is home to an annual national orchid exhibition, attracting enthusiasts from all over the country. But among Fresians the strongest passion and most popular sport is football—or “soccer” for a minority of the world’s population. Locals have been participating in football clubs for as long as they’ve been around and value the activity as being essential to the community’s cultural fabric.
While no notable trophies or global championships adorn the stadium, local residents often gather to support and cheer for their favorite teams during matches.
If a game is on, it will not be unattended. But think of it more ike the closest place to go and have a kick-around with friends. Everybody appears to be welcome, both in the stands and on the field.
Every so often, a stadium is just an estadio.
