Alba Iulia Main Bus Station

This bus station, or autogară, was built in the 1970s to serve as a transport hub for residents in need of a ride in or around Romania. Located in the historic region of Transylvania, the city of Alba Iulia has a small population despite being a site of great significance.

In 1599, Michael the Brave—ruler of Wallachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania—united the three regions, and in doing so recast the future of Romania.

More recently, at the end of World War I, representatives gathered here for further unifying purposes, this time to proclaim the bond of Transylvania with the Kingdom of Romania, while anointing Alba Iulia the official capital.

Neither of these events occurred at the city’s primary bus station, nor did the autogară exist during these momentous occasions. But should you ever find yourself waiting beneath its sweet pink stripes, remember that you are in a town made famous for bringing disparate forces together. With that in mind, consider saying hello, or bună ziua, to your neighbor.
