When surgeon Bartholomew Mosse opened a maternity hospital in 1745, he faced a funding crisis. His solution? Build a lavish entertainment complex next door. Completed in 1764, the venue hosted balls and concerts where Dublin’s elite paid handsomely to dance and dine with all proceeds funding the hospital. By 1897, those same gilded halls were screening moving pictures, and in 1910 became a full-time cinema. For nearly a century, moviegoers unknowingly supported obstetric care, making it perhaps the only theater where ticket sales literally helped deliver babies.
