When 32 souls perished on the Black Middens rocks in November 1864, over 100 men signed up on the spot to form what became the world’s first volunteer life brigade. The Board of Trade was so impressed they circulated Tynemouth’s rulebook to every coastguard station in Britain, inadvertently birthing the modern coastal rescue system. Today, their 1887 Watch House still operates as both museum and active rescue base, staffed entirely by volunteers responding to around 120 calls per year.
