The first weekend in September brings an explosion of color to Lakolk beach on Denmark’s Rømø Island. Since the late 1980s, this has been home to the annual Rømø Dragon Festival—northern Europe’s largest international gathering of kite enthusiasts.
On this Danish isle, the ample sand is used for Volkswagen Vanagon meetups, horseback riding, kite buggying, and nude sunbathing (“frequented by many Germans,” according to one travel guide). Rømø, namely Lakolk beach, offers the kind of strong westerly winds and crashing waves that make conditions perfect for skilled surfers, windsurfers, and kite connoisseurs.
If you’re on Lakolk in the fall, you’ll be enjoying yourself with thousands of other highflyers on one of Europe’s widest sand beaches. Children can happily splash around in the shallow lakes left by the outgoing sea while you focus on grown-up responsibilities, like letting your shark kite roar and soar.
