Dating back to 1654, Queen’s Lane opened a sip of tea later than The Grand Café—but, as its baristas share proudly, it’s always served hot beverages since then. (Just don’t ask whether they’ve always been served in the same building.) Either way, nearly four hundred years later, they get the honorary brick for being the oldest continually serving coffeehouse in Europe.

Locals are fiercely loyal to whichever side of the street they choose for their caffeine. But both have been hives for discussion for centuries, where important theories have been brewed, debated, and consumed.
