Julia Morgan designed the estate, including a 110-foot heated saltwater pool lined with Italian marble, spanned at the center by a Venetian marble bridge. The final cost was $7 million, $3 million for construction and $4 million for furnishings. Actress Colleen Moore called it “the biggest house on the beach, the beach between San Diego and Vancouver”. Guests ranged from Charlie Chaplin to Winston Churchill. In 1947, she sold the estate for $600,000 to hotelier Joseph Drown. Wallis Annenberg, who had fond memories of the Sand & Sea Club, pledged a $27.5 million grant after the 1994 Northridge earthquake severely damaged the property.
