Berlin, Germany
Haus der Kulturen der Welt
Known locally as "the pregnant oyster," this center for the arts was a gift from the US to Berlin in 1957.
Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay
Though crowded with enough curiosities to appear to sell airport-variety souvenirs, Almacén La Carlota offers an array of artwork, ceramics, woolen wraps, hand-sewn books, and ironwork all from local artists and artisans.
The street outside is as bustling as it gets in Colonia, as tables are set out for patrons to enjoy a glass of Malbec, share a cup of yerba maté, or devour a plate of chivito, the national dish of Uruguay. This let’s-add-everything sandwich is made of sliced beefsteak, bacon, mozzarella, ham, tomatoes, olives, fried eggs, and mayonnaise, somehow crammed into a bun and surrounded by fries.
If able to move after consuming one, you can often find locals spontaneously dancing the tango, perhaps to burn off some of the calories consumed, or simply enjoying the rhythmic art form that was developed in cities surrounding the Río de la Plata basin.
