When brothers Stef and Tim Zeestraten planted thousands of lavender seedlings on bare South Island land in the early 2010s, they probably didn’t anticipate their farm’s most famous feature would be a door to nowhere. Standing alone among the purple rows since the farm opened in 2014, this violet-painted threshold frames nothing but mountains and more lavender, yet, it’s become a pilgrimage site for photographers. No building, no walls, just a door planted in the earth like some kind of agricultural non sequitur, daring visitors to step through into… exactly where they already are.
