For nearly a century, Superior’s economy hinged on what lay beneath the ground. The Magma Mine that produced over 1.3 million tons of copper before closing for good in 1996. Today, the town’s fortune depends on what towers above: Queen Creek Canyon’s volcanic spires, where nearly 1,000 climbing routes now draw adventurers to a landscape that once only miners knew. The climbing shack on Main Street represents Superior’s unlikely pivot from extracting ore to guiding climbers up welded tuff formations just four miles east of town.
