Egeskov Castle
This floating castle appears to be from an enchanted fable, but in actuality it is Europe's best preserved Renaissance water castle.

Luxor Governorate, Egypt | C.1886
The Winter Palace opened in 1886 on the banks of the Nile, built by Thomas Cook for travelers who wanted Egypt with a touch of Europe. It was grand without being loud, the kind of place where linen suits and handwritten letters made sense. The name stuck, and so did the feeling.
The hotel’s architecture leans colonial, all high ceilings and long corridors, every detail placed to catch the light. The Pavillon wing came later, sharing the gardens but not quite the gravity. The original building still feels like the main event. Its carved wood and marble floors have seen decades of footsteps, the kind that echo a little even after people leave.
Howard Carter stayed here while searching for Tutankhamun’s tomb, and this is where he told the world he had found it. Agatha Christie spent time here too, writing parts of Death on the Nile. Winston Churchill and King Farouk visited, along with diplomats, explorers, and guests whose stories stayed behind.
Time has been kind to the palace. It has changed but never entirely adapted. The gardens stay still in the heat, and the Nile moves just beyond them. Inside, the light falls in perfect alignment across the tiled floors. It looks like it was framed on purpose.
Today, the Winter Palace is owned by Egypt’s tourism authority and run by Sofitel. There are 86 rooms in the old wing, more in the annex, and a view that hasn’t needed much improvement since 1886. Guests sit on balconies at sunset, the river turning gold in front of them. Some places feel preserved. This one feels patient.
