Built as an act of national penance after France’s humiliating 1870 defeat, Sacré-Cœur took 39 years to complete- but architect Paul Abadie had a trick up his sleeve. The basilica’s travertine stone from Château-Landon releases calcite every time it rains, essentially giving the building a fresh coat of white paint with each shower. While Paris pollution darkens Notre Dame and the Louvre, Sacré-Cœur just keeps getting whiter.
