In the shadow of Monte Rosa, which despite sounding romantic, actually means ‘glacier’ in the local dialect, sits a German-speaking enclave in the heart of Italian Alps. Gressoney’s residents are Walser, descendants of medieval Germanic settlers who migrated over mountain passes in the 12th century and still speak Titsch, an archaic Alemannic dialect. This linguistic island has preserved traditions lost elsewhere for eight centuries, and the local pasticceria remains what it’s always been: the village gathering spot where ancient Walser German mingles with Italian over espresso and pastries.
