When Julius Meinl opened as caterer to the Habsburgs in 1862, the family built an empire on coffee and caviar that eventually spanned over 700 stores across Austria. By 1998, facing retail giants, they sold everything except one store. The flagship at Graben 19 remained in family hands, a deliberate holdout on Vienna’s most prestigious street, now in its fifth generation under Julius V, still curating specialties from every corner of the world beneath ceilings that once served imperial courts.

Next door at number 20, an 1898 building adorned with reliefs of distant trade routes sat waiting. In 2023, Louis Vuitton moved in, transforming the space with Peter Marino’s floating spiral staircase. Luxury replacing luxury, on a street that began as a Roman trench and has been reinventing its own grandeur ever since.

Some empires contract until only the essential remains. Graben 19 is what Julius Meinl decided it could not live without.
