Kapsali Lighthouse

When Britain reluctantly handed Kythera to Greece in 1864 as a coronation gift for the new pro-British King George I, the lighthouse at Kapsali had already been guiding ships for eleven years. Built in 1853 during the United States of the Ionian Islands, a peculiar British protectorate that sounds more American than Hellenic, the tower became part of a network of beacons the British scattered across islands they’d never fully wanted but couldn’t quite abandon. The lighthouse was automated in 1985, trading keepers for solar panels, but still flashes every three seconds above the double bay.

Kythera markets itself as the birthplace of Aphrodite, and Kapsali leans into the association with the confidence of a place that has nothing to lose. Its beach curves into a near perfect omega, the final letter of the Greek alphabet, which local guides will tell you carries some ancient significance and which almost certainly does not. Across the water on Antikithira stands a second, more remote lighthouse, proof that even a lonely outpost can have a lonelier neighbor.

Britain’s Ionian protectorate lasted forty nine years and ended not with a rebellion or a war, but with a gift.
