Morro Bay, California
Perched along the Pacific Highway 1 in Morro Bay, California, this former antique store looks like it sailed straight out of another era—especially given its round 20th-century cruise ship porthole-style windows. With its faded salmon-pink façade and sleek horizontal lines, the building embodies Streamline Moderne, a substyle of Art Deco that thrived in the 1930s and 1940s.
Inspired by the speed and efficiency of planes, trains, and ocean liners (I think I’ve seen that movie?), Streamline Moderne embraced, oxymoronically, a retro-futuristic aesthetic—one that suggested forward momentum even as it froze time in an architectural moment. This building, with its smooth curves, nautical details, and glass brick tower, reflects a bygone era when design was as much about movement as it was about style.
Though its exact history remains elusive, its presence along the Pacific coast feels fitting. The structure itself seems to nod to the romance of travel—of ocean waves, luxury voyages, and a time when adventure had a certain polished glamor. Once a haven for antiques, the store might have once held relics of the past, but its very walls whisper stories of their own—a testament to an era when architecture was built not just to house, but to transport in more ways than one.
