Gold Bar, Washington
Perched along Washington’s Highway 2, Espresso Chalet has been serving coffee with a side of folklore for more than 30 years. Mark and Sandy Klein bought the lot in 1992, first operating out of a converted camper. What began as a roadside hut became the highway’s longest-running espresso stand and a cultural landmark.
Its fame isn’t just local. The chalet played a cameo in the 1987 film Harry and the Hendersons, and today a 14-foot wooden Bigfoot statue (the first of several added over the decades) greets travelers with a grin that’s part welcome, part warning. Inside, the theme continues: Sasquatch memorabilia, quirky milk options like goat and hemp, and an atmosphere that embraces the myth as much as the menu.
When the Bolt Creek Fire swept through in 2022, the stand transformed into something more than a pit stop, offering free coffee to firefighters and serving as a community trapline for updates and comfort.
Order a latte, step onto the back patio, and the real show begins: panoramic mountain views that make the coffee taste even richer. Espresso Chalet is a brew of cinema, community, and cryptid charm — proof that some roadside stops become destinations in their own right.
