For over a month each year, Dursey Island’s fifty or so residents found themselves cut off entirely, stranded by a tidal race through Dursey Sound violent enough to make small boats a genuine gamble. The local parish priest pushed the case, Cork County Council delivered, and on December 5th, 1969, then Taoiseach Jack Lynch officially opened Ireland’s only cable car, a six-passenger box suspended 250 meters above the water for a 374-meter crossing that takes seven and a half minutes each way. It remains, by most accounts, the only aerial transport in Europe to cross open seawater.

The cable car never pretended to be exclusively for tourists. For decades it carried farmers and their livestock alongside passengers, cows clattering across the wooden floor as the whole apparatus swayed over the Sound, which is either a charming detail or a genuinely unsettling one depending on how you feel about sharing a swinging metal box with cattle. The arrangement held until January 2012, when livestock transport finally stopped, leaving the car to tourists, farmers commuting without their herds, and the handful of permanent residents who still depend on it.

That dependence became sharply visible in 2022, when a structural assessment revealed the support towers were nearing the end of their service life, and Storm Barra accelerated the timeline by doing considerable damage on its own. The cable car shut down for what was meant to be eight months and stretched well past a year, during which residents resorted to boats and considerable quantities of diesel just to keep farms running and shopping delivered. It reopened in June 2023 after a €1.6 million upgrade, the same year visitor numbers, which had climbed from 12,000 in 2015 to over 21,000 annually, made clear that what started as an emergency lifeline had become a tourist draw in its own right.
