Millions of Seoulites will swear that instant noodles taste better by the river. It’s not nostalgia or view of the skyline. It’s a genuine belief that has spawned convenience store ramen-cooking stations, delivery riders navigating crowds with fried chicken and beer, and a dining ritual so democratic it transformed Olympic-era parkland into the city’s largest outdoor living room.
The transformation began with the Han River Comprehensive Development Project in the early 1980s, an ambitious effort to tame seasonal flooding and present a modern capital before the 1988 Olympics. What had long served as a working river became dozens of manicured riverside parks. Its islands, once home to small farming and fishing communities, now welcome joggers, cyclists, picnickers, and late-night snack seekers from spring through autumn.
At Banpo Hangang Park, that reinvention reaches its fullest expression. As evening falls, the grassy slopes fill with picnic mats and the unmistakable smell of instant noodles. Convenience stores do brisk business at their outdoor cooking stations. The Banpo Bridge fountain shoots illuminated water into the river overhead. And yes – the ramen does taste better here. Millions of Seoulites can’t all be wrong.
