Ichiran Ramen
This famed Japanese ramen franchise started as a single stall that required a membership to be seated.
Kampar, Malaysia
Bandar Agacia in Kampar, Perak, began as a bright vision. A mini-town donned in pastels, inspired by Disneyland’s Main Street, it featured themed streets like Disney Avenue, whimsical cafés, and shopfronts painted in storybook hues. Launched in 2012, the plan went further: commercial spaces, a luxury apartment tower, and even a Cinderella-style castle that was never completed.
For a time, the dream seemed real. Photographers flocked to its facades, visitors posted pastel panoramas, and Kampar, a town once defined by the riches of Malaya’s tin boom, briefly held a new claim to fame.
But the magic proved fleeting. Many shops shuttered, the cafés went quiet, and the streets fell still. What was meant to be a bustling hub drifted into limbo, its fairytale veneer fading into melancholy charm.
Though the Perak state government has floated ideas of reviving the site with events and art installations, its future remains uncertain. Today, Bandar Agacia endures as a reminder that ambitious visions need more than inspiration to survive: they need a story that lasts beyond the opening act. But who knows — the end hasn’t necessarily been written in the stars yet. Perhaps this idea will find its own fairytale ending!
