Wrocław, Poland has seen a complex history that includes the switching of hands between eight different kingdoms and empires in the past 1,000 years. As Poland’s fourth-largest city it is now the major industrial, commercial and educational center for the region. Wrocław University is lauded not only for its beauty, but also for its superb education where nine Nobel Prize winners have emerged. The town’s streets are sprinkled with exceptional examples of Baroque and Gothic architecture, and the virtually extinct tradition of lighting gas lit lamps is still a romantic nightly occurrence in some parts of town.
