Devoted owners of ice shanties agree: “We do not have ice-fishing seasons in Ontario—only fishing seasons.” In other words, these humble winter homes do not merely provide accommodation for some sort of recreational activity. They enable a way of life.

With approximately 250,000 lakes in Ontario, there’s no shortage of those who live for the frost and bemoan the thawing of their home base. And though these huts on Lake Nipissing may appear to be structural embodiments of solitude, they actually foster a strong sense of community.
