When construction began on this stadium-sized prayer hall, nobody anticipated it would become Tabriz’s most enduring work-in-progress. Decades later, the sporadic construction continues. Locals blame it for undermining the foundations of its 700-year-old neighbor, the Arg-e Tabriz, a towering remnant of a 14th-century citadel. The new mosalla now dwarfs the historic brick fortress that survived earthquakes, Russian invasions, and constitutional revolutions, creating an architectural standoff between preservation and perpetual construction.
