Floyd Wippel pumped gas at his Main Street station for over 42 years, handing out nickels to kids for sodas and chatting with travelers along US Highway 10 before Interstate 90 rerouted traffic away from downtown. After closing in the early 1990s, the Wippel Station sat abandoned for decades until Michaela Allenbaugh spotted it while running her coffee shop in Cle Elum. When it hit the market, she and her husband closed the deal in under four days, transforming espresso machines into the new fuel and preserving the mid-century roadside aesthetic.
