In the heart of one of South Africa’s oldest fishing villages—recognized for its jagged coastline with whitewashed fishermen’s cottages made from the area’s abundant limestone—sits a hotel that has served as everything from a public dance hall to holding cells.
This quirky gem of a hotel and home of the Panty Bar has been situated here since 1863. Ownership changed multiple times, until the early 1970s, when it was bought by Johan and Wilna Carosini.
Johan had owned the Paternoster for only one year when he started the tradition of displaying honeymoon underwear in the bar. The popularity of the Panty Bar grew along with its collection of lingerie dangling from the ceiling. The impressive assortment was taken down in 1983, after the police were notified about the “unholy practice.” Police official Basson had the unfortunate job of confiscating the matrimonial undergarments, gaining the nickname “Panty” Basson.
Although losing such lovingly donated decorations was tough, the Panty Bar came back stronger than ever. After taking the reins of the business in the ’90s, Johan’s son, Giorello, reinvigorated the tradition and began the collection anew.
The best way to experience the hotel and its underbelly, naturally, is to journey there. However, if you’re looking to unload your nuptial knickers from the comfort of your home, global donations are accepted.
