Old Forge, New York | C.1810
The Old Forge Dam, constructed in 1810, was initially built to power an iron forge in the southwestern Adirondacks. Beyond its industrial purpose, the dam played a crucial role in regulating water flow for log drives along the Black and Moose Rivers. In 1880, the dam’s height was increased by two feet, effectively merging the lakes up to the Sixth Lake, thereby enhancing water storage capacity.
The Fulton Chain of Lakes, comprising eight interconnected lakes, owes its formation to the damming of the Moose River at Old Forge. This strategic development expanded the lakes from 2,762 acres to 3,481 acres in 1798, significantly enhancing the region’s water management capabilities. The lakes are named after Robert Fulton, the inventor of the steamboat, who envisioned creating an Adirondack canal by connecting these water bodies.
Over time, the Old Forge Dam and the Fulton Chain of Lakes have become integral to the region’s recreational landscape. The area now supports activities such as boating, fishing, and hiking, attracting visitors to towns like Old Forge and Inlet.Notably, the Fulton Chain serves as the starting point for the Adirondack Canoe Classic, a three-day, 90-mile canoe race that draws participants from various locations.
