In the 1960s, South Korean deep-ocean fishermen had boats based on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria (the Canary Islands). A decade later, the island of Gran Canaria had a population of nearly 15,000 Korean residents! Though the total population of the Korean community in Gran Canaria has diminished in the last thirty years, the presence of their vibrant, welcoming community has resulted in the only Koreatown in any Spanish region. A Koreatown on this Spanish island off the coast of Morocco, Africa. And they call the US the great melting pot: Americans better share this nickname with this area, too!
Las Palmas Gospel Church the positively pleasing pink parish pictured, symbolizes perfectly the beautiful mélange of cultures in this area. The service at Las Palmas is in Korean, but there are three separate back rooms which have immediate translations to Spanish, English, and Chinese. Las Palmas is also one of the few bible-based churches on the island where visitors or locals can worship in English.
The church claims to represent “the pride of the local Korean community,” where people of all nationalities, be it Korean, Spanish, African, Chinese, or visitors from all corners of the Earth, can worship together, “transcending language and borders.” Just beautiful, hermoso, 美丽的, 아름다운.
