Pacific Coast Highway

California’s most iconic drive was not created for day cruising or scenic drives, but rather to help those in need. John Roberts was a man of many interests. Not only was he a rural country doctor, but in his spare time he also became a postmaster, city planner, and county supervisor. He dreamed of a road that would take him from his home in Monterey quickly to patients in need as his only mode of transport to many of his patients was by boat or horseback. One day a shipwreck required John to take a four hour ride to care for an injured person and he decided enough was enough. That day John added one more job to his ever growing list of occupations: the first surveyor of California’s Highway one.
