Located in the Fisher’s Island Sound at the base of the Mystic River sits Enders Island, an 11-acre coastal island. Construction started in 1918 after the island was purchased by Thomas B. Enders. Initially, the island served as a private residence for Enders and his wife, Alys, who took pride in decorating her Arts and Crafts-style mansion. For instance, Alys designed stone tiles that adorn the grand main house.
Pictured here is a tiny fisherman’s chapel which overlooks crashing waves, and surely served as a peaceful respite for fishermen throughout the island’s rich history. Today, in addition to serving as a spot for visitors to explore, the island also hosts programs, retreats, and workshops including an addiction & recovery program. Alys Enders wanted the island preserved so that it could provide a space for spirituality, art, and charity. A look around the island and the services it offers is a testament to Alys’ legacy.
