Sala Redutowa

In 1938, a pack of taxi drivers captured notorious Silesian bandit Nikifor Maruszeczko at the Black Eagle Hotel. After years on the run, one of Poland’s most wanted criminals was finally cornered over dinner. It was a fittingly dramatic chapter for a building that had already welcomed emperors and generals.

Distinguished guests arrived early. Archduke Karl Habsburg, the future last Emperor of Austria-Hungary, stayed here with his wife in 1912. Just three years later, Józef Piłsudski became a regular while commanding the First Brigade of the Polish Legions during World War I.

Built in 1905 by local spirits manufacturer Jakub Gross, the complex took its name from the double-headed Habsburg eagle that ruled this corner of Silesia. At its heart sat the 709-square-meter Sala Redutowa, a Neo-Renaissance ballroom draped in iron arcades, ornate plasterwork, and enough gilt to remind guests they were somewhere important. It quickly became Bielsko-Biała’s social epicenter, hosting balls, concerts, political meetings, and, on at least one memorable occasion, the capture of a fugitive.

After surviving decades of communist-era neglect, the building was transformed into offices and a shopping arcade in the 1990s. The ballroom still hosts weddings and celebrations today, though Jakub Gross probably imagined many futures for his grand hall. Sitting above a shopping arcade likely wasn’t one of them.
