Artist Paul Kelly purchased a real lobster, had it stuffed, and spent six months in an Adelaide warehouse sculpting a 17-meter fibreglass replica, complete with intricate exoskeleton details and knowing eyes. The inspiration? A trip to America by local lobsterman Ian Backler, who returned home determined to lure travelers off the Princes Highway. Larry (as locals call him) opened in 1979, and in 2021 was crowned Australia’s number one Big Thing in a national poll beating out over 1,000 competitors including the iconic Big Banana.
