Prague, Czech Republic | C.1475
A city built like a storybook, Prague’s famous architecture is a living testament to the centuries of architects trying to outdream one another. One of the more remarkable sites is the Prašná brána, or Powder Tower, which stands like a Gothic sentinel at the threshold between Prague’s Old Town and its New Town.
Constructed in 1475 as one of the city’s original 13 gates, the tower was intended to serve as an ornate ceremonial gate, where Bohemian kings would begin their coronation procession toward Prague Castle. Despite its militaristic nickname, the tower was never built for battle. It was a public statement of grandeur and civic pride.
Its name came later, in the 17th century, when the structure was repurposed to store gunpowder, though it never did fulfill that mission. Instead, at one point, its upper floors housed alchemists and goldsmiths, who toiled in secret while the city thrummed below.
Today, visitors who climb the narrow spiral staircase to the viewing gallery are rewarded with a commanding view of the tangled rooftops and spires of Prague, the same perspective once reserved for sentries and schemers.
