Italy’s Lake Misurina is globally renowned for its remarkable microclimate. The notably fresh alpine air, high altitude, and pristine environment made it the ideal site for the Istituto Pio XII di Misurina, once a center for those seeking care and rehabilitation from respiratory challenges, primarily children. It was the only place in Italy that specialized in treating kids with asthma. Most of the patients were prescribed not only medicine but also extensive time on the shores of the lake, taking in the crisp, healing mountain air.
Lake Misurina’s crystal-clear waters have also inspired a curious myth. According to legend, Misurina was a rebellious girl with a doting father, King Sorapis. She requested a magic mirror, which King Sorapis succeeded in obtaining—at the cost of being forced to transform into a mountain. As he began to rise, Misurina tumbled off her father’s lap. The gigantic Sorapis wept uncontrollably, and his tears gathered in two large streams, which converged to create Lake Misurina.
It is a bizarre origin legend, but to visit Istituto Pio XII and its alpine lake is to appreciate why otherworldly lore would be attached as the only possible explanation for such beauty. It is among the country’s most breathtaking sights…made that much more so by actually taking a breath there.
