Lynda Mossman’s specialty was 1940s attire and accessories “from your granny’s attic,” but she always had a good eye for the range of recycled or vintage clothing she wanted to see in her store, Past Caring.
In 1988 she established her charming shop in the tiny town of Holt, an ideal location for weekend shopping trips, particularly for those seeking antiques or vintage attire.
Though small, the shop heaved with a wonderful variety of gear and curios dating as far back as the 1800s. Most of Mrs. Mossman’s items were of another time or a specific decade of style: Victorian capes, Edwardian camisoles, 1920s velvet jackets, 1950s cocktail dresses—and just the right accessories to match a given outfit.
Mossman took pride in handpicking everything, sourcing her supply from antique fairs and people caught up in the trend to clear out the clutter of nostalgic items. Past Caring especially caught on in Holt during events like the annual North Norfolk Railway 1940s weekend, when locals dress in clothing from the era.
After thirty-two years of bargain hunting, however, Mossman placed the beloved shop up for sale, with some regret but for the phenomenal reason that her life was about to take a new direction. “I’m going to be a grandmother for the first time,” she said. Today, Mrs. Mossman has moved on and is now focused on stocking her very own granny attic.
