Most visitors to the Taj Mahal fixate on the marble tomb—the final resting place of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his favorite wife (yes, favorite), Mumtaz Mahal. But the 42-acre complex includes gardens, a reflecting pool, a guesthouse, and at the far western edge, facing Mecca: the Kau Ban Mosque.
Completed in 1643, the red sandstone mosque mirrors a guesthouse on the eastern wall. They were intended to be identical twins flanking the tomb, but slight variations crept into the design—architectural siblings, not clones. The mosque’s exterior welcomes visitors through three entrances. The main iwan—an arched doorway—is adorned with black marble Quranic inscriptions and decorative flowers carved using pietra dura, the intricate inlay technique that defines Mughal craftsmanship. Two smaller entrances flank the center, and three domes crown the structure.
Inside, the Kau Ban remains an active place of worship. A mihrab niche indicates the direction of Mecca. An imam delivers speeches from the minbar platform. The floor is inlaid with a prayer rug marking 596 places for worship—geometry in service of devotion.
In a small stone room within the mosque, Mumtaz Mahal’s body once rested before being moved to the main tomb. She died in 1631 after giving birth to her fourteenth child. Her name—a gift from her husband—translates to “jewel of the palace.” Even in death, she was moved twice: first to the mosque, then to the monument that would make her immortal.
