When Thakur Jait Singh Ji of Mandawa needed a place to stay during his visits to the Maharaja of Jaipur’s court in 1885, he built himself a proper city residence. The hundred-year-old wooden carved pillars showcase craftsmanship that modern contractors can’t replicate. Like most Rajasthani monuments, the haveli wasn’t built all at once. Each generation added new wings, rooms, and arches in whatever architectural style was trending at the time, creating a layered aesthetic spanning decades. Today, Thakur Jait Singh’s great-grandson, Thakur Durga Singh Ji, runs the family residence as an eleven-suite boutique hotel. Milk comes from the family’s own herd of cows. A biogas plant runs on cow dung. Guests sleep in rooms where four generations of Thakurs slept before them. One city pad built for courtly visits. One family that never left. One energy system powered entirely by livestock.
