SOGNI Building

When Fascist minister Edmondo Rossoni transformed his hometown from a village of 500 into a rationalist utopia in the 1930s, he did it behind Mussolini’s back. Tasked with increasing Italy’s food production, he instead poured resources into pastel-hued civic buildings and wide boulevards. This bathhouse once served the regime’s youth organizations, its rooftop spelling BAGNI. After a 2000s restoration, someone changed a single letter, and the building became SOGNI, dreams instead of baths, a one-letter edit that accidentally captured what the whole experiment had been: an idealist’s vision frozen in time.

Mussolini eventually found out, the way dictators tend to: he sent someone to check. A spy came back reporting that his agriculture minister appeared to be secretly building an entire city instead of growing more wheat, so Rossoni was summoned to Rome to explain himself. He talked his way out of it by pitching Tresigallo not as insubordination but as a prototype, a template Italy could stamp out nationwide. Mussolini let him keep going, reluctantly, and the town kept rising, pastel block by pastel block, until the war shut the whole thing down before it was finished. Rossoni spent his final years in Rome and Viareggio, rarely visiting the place he’d built. When he died in 1965, Tresigallo still buried him at its center, a fitting arrangement for a man whose one lasting legacy was a town that never quite figured out whether it was a monument or a mistake.
