Sedlo Pass Souvenir Kiosk

The road over Sedlo Pass is so narrow that one car must pull aside to let another pass. It twists through Durmitor National Park past sheer limestone peaks and roughly carved tunnels, climbing to 1,907 meters above sea level, the highest paved mountain pass in Montenegro. The pass takes its name from the saddle-shaped peak visible from the road: sedlo means “saddle.”

At the summit, a wooden kiosk does brisk business in mountain honey and rakija, that Balkan fuel equally suited to celebration and medication. The setup is simple: a few shelves, a cash box, honey jars from local hives, and bottles of fruit brandy that clock in around 40 to 50 percent alcohol. No one staffs it year-round. Winter snows make the pass impassable from November through May, but come summer, it’s a reliable pit stop for cyclists, hikers, and drivers who’ve just white-knuckled their way through tunnels with no lights and turns with no guardrails.
