Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Rocío

Most Spanish villages evolved over centuries from Roman foundations or Moorish quarters. El Rocío did the opposite: it was built entirely on sand, deliberately, to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of horses arriving for Europe’s largest pilgrimage. The village has a permanent population estimated at somewhere between 700 and 1,700, depending on the source, but once a year nearly a million pilgrims descend for the Romería del Rocío.

The sandy streets have remained untouched for over 200 years, hitching posts stand as standard urban furniture, and bars set their tables at the perfect height for riders to eat without dismounting. For 51 weeks a year, nobody agrees on how many people actually live there. For one week, that number stops mattering entirely.
