San Sebastian de la Gomera

Christopher Columbus departed from San Sebastián de La Gomera on September 6, 1492, making it (not Palos, Spain) the true last stop before discovering the Americas. Today, locals reportedly play football on black volcanic sand beside the same bay where the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María took on water from the Aguada Well. The town’s coat of arms reads “From here, Columbus set out,” a claim to fame that earns it the nickname Isla Colombina, yet it remains one of the Canary Islands’ quietest capitals with just 9,000 residents.

Local legend holds that Columbus lingered longer than his voyage required, delayed by Beatriz de Bobadilla, Countess of La Gomera, whom he is said to have courted at her fortress, the Torre del Conde, still standing watch over the harbor today. The claim is unconfirmed, but the tower is not the only thing on the island built to outlast a rumor: San Sebastián is also home to Silbo Gomero, a whistled language UNESCO now protects, developed so residents could pass messages across ravines too steep to cross on foot. Some places invent new ways to say goodbye. This one just made sure the message would carry.
