This stunning Spanish plaza was designed to astonish visitors during the Ibero-American exposition of 1929.
When buildings crumble in Seville, Laura Salcines is there to salvage what matters most: the azulejos. Since founding Populart in 1977, she has rescued centuries-old ceramic tiles from condemned structures across Andalusia, some dating back over 400 years. These fragments of demolished convents, palaces, and homes now line her shop in a narrow passage near the Cathedral, where a tile from 1880 costs the same as mass-produced tourist fare, about €25.
The last antique shop standing in Barrio Santa Cruz is less souvenir stop, more architectural salvage operation. Everything else in the neighborhood got knocked down, rebuilt, or turned into a tapas bar. The tiles just changed addresses.
